Explore Dorset on foot
Twenty short walks explore Dorset’s coast, rolling countryside, historic towns and villages, with a particularly rich mixture of archaeology, literature and local history. The routes are mostly between two and four miles, making them well suited to exploring a place rather than simply covering distance.
Walks include Tyneham, Lulworth, Shaftesbury, Dorchester, Cerne Abbas, Durlston Head, Portland, Blandford Forum and Lambert’s Castle. Thomas Hardy’s Dorset is a recurring theme, from Higher Bockhampton and Dorchester to Sturminster Newton and Osmington, while Iron Age earthworks, castles and the Jurassic Coast add still more interest. It is a compact guide to many of the county’s most distinctive landscapes and stories.
Each walk provides clear route directions together with mapping, photographs and practical information covering distance, gradient, difficulty, approximate walking time, parking, paths, facilities and places for refreshments.
